Corona Pandemic

Further steps towards opening decided

Germany is making progress in containing the corona pandemic thanks to people keeping their distance and observing contact restrictions in their everyday lives. On 6 May, the Federal Government and federal states were, therefore, able to make decisions regarding further steps towards opening.

Contact restrictions will largely remain in place until 5 June but they will be relaxed: in future, relatives from two different households will also be able to meet together in a public space. This is particularly important for families.

Classroom teaching for all pupils will start again before the summer holidays. Emergency care for pre-school children will be gradually extended from 11 May.

All shops are allowed to open regardless of the sales area size.

The re-openings of restaurants, hotels, cinemas or theatres will now be regulated by the federal states.

Recurring visits from a selected person are possible in hospitals, nursing homes or institutions for the disabled.

Recreational outdoor sports are now allowed, also in sports clubs – but subject to hygiene and distancing rules. First and second German football league games can take place without spectators from the second half of May onwards.

Also prohibited until 31 August: large events such as public festivals, concerts and major sporting events with spectators.

The development is good, but the authorities will react immediately with new restrictions if there is a rapid increase in regional infections. This is the case if more than 50 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants are registered within the last 7 days in a district or district-free town.

Please help to ensure success in the fight against the corona pandemic. You are protecting yourself and others by keeping your distance in public spaces. This is the only way in which we will be able to return to our usual way of life, step by step.
